Here at Calcbench we’re all for improving the quality of higher education, so we were delighted to discover recently that Calcbench data has been cited dozens of times by accounting professors conducting academic research.

We found this fact on Google Scholar, Google’s online index of academic papers. Type “Calcbench” in the search bar and you’ll get at least 65 results from the last six years.

What are some of the subjects where Calcbench data helped an academic? Well, a random selection of examples includes…

A paper published earlier this month by Dana Hollie of the University of Toledo. She was doing an early look at what companies have been disclosing as critical audit matters, which came into effect this summer. Calcbench even had its own post about CAMs not long ago.
Another paper published in September explored whether the U.S. tax reform law of 2017 changed the nature of executive compensation at publicly traded firms. (Short answer: no.) That work was done by folks at Stanford, Indiana, and University of Chicago.
Three professors from the Singapore Institute of Technology and the University of Queensland used Calcbench data last year to see how data visualization of accounting information could be improved.
The Journal of Contemporary Accounting Research published a paper earlier this year from three professors who cited Calcbench in a paper about whether adopting XBRL technology reduces earnings management. (Short answer: yes.)
And Rani Hoitash (Bentley University) and Udi Hoitash (Northeastern) used Calcbench data in 2017 to measure complexity in accounting statements. That’s another where Calcbench devoted a post on our own blog to their work.
